Beliefwatch: Challenging the Existence of God – Newsweek Periscope – MSNBC.com : “BlasphemyChallenge.com”

Check out this article from Newsweek that describes a challenge currently being pursued by many using YouTube to promote it. A website called The Blasphemy Challenge adamantly states “Do you have a soul you’re not using?” and “Believe in God? We can fix that” suggesting to visitors that they take on their challenge by recording a video of them committing the “unforgivable sin,” that is, “whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven,” found in Mark 3:29, and post the video on YouTube for all to see. The poster will then receive a free copy of “The God Who Wasn’t There” on DVD.

I find this whole thing very intriguing. I am not sure what to say about it. A very big part of me believes that it is not possible to commit the “unforgivable sin” simply by saying to a camera “I deny the Holy Spirit.” I have to wonder what understanding a person must have of the Holy Spirit in order for such a statement to be considered unforgivable blasphemy, for I believe it impossible for a person to deny something they know nothing about.

In the same way that we all make horrible statements and claims about other religions such as Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism, we truly don’t know much about them, unless of course one has been raised in such a religion. But even then, if you were raised in such a religion and live in the West… you are not a devoted follower of the true religion as the lives we lead here would not be permitted by such religions–just read their scriptures!

Anyways… I thought of putting a video up myself and asking God for forgiveness immediately afterwards just so I could get that free video. But I decided that would be stupid. So when I get some money, maybe I’ll buy it up as I think it would be a great discussion piece for any group.

On the other hand… if there is anyone out there who would like to send me this video for free, I would gladly receive it! Come on guys! Try and convince me that my God doesn’t exist! …then again, if you believe my God doesn’t exist… why do you feel the need to let everyone else know… don’t you believe it strongly within yourself enough to be satisfied with your beliefs and let it be? Last I checked, atheism wasn’t evangelistic.
